If you’re thinking of selling a home during the holidays, you’re probably not sure if this is a good time for potential buyers. Okay, curb appeal might not be at its best, but with some understated decorations inside and outside, you can emphasize your home’s coziness factor. Below are some do’s and don’ts of selling a home during the holidays.
DON’T
- Succumb to the urge to cover all surfaces with every piece of holiday bric-a-brac you can lay your hands on. The less clutter there is, the more buyers can conceptualize their own aesthetic tastes.
- Use garish decorations on the lawn like a huge blow-up snowman, or light up every inch of your home like the Griswolds in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.
DO
- Hire an experienced real estate agent–someone who won’t disappear for the entire holiday period. Ask your family and friends if they can recommend an agent who has a reputation of going above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to selling a home. This will reduce your stress and allow you to enjoy the season.
- Focus on areas such as the front door, hearth/fireplace, and the dining room/kitchen table.
- Decorate the outdoor shrubs with white net lighting to create a soft glow in the evening.
- Use fresh garland for wreaths or heat up nutmeg, orange and cinnamon slices in water on your stovetop for a welcoming holiday aroma.
- Have a photo album on the coffee table with pictures of your home and garden through the various seasons of the year.
By following these simple tips, selling a home during the holidays can be a successful and pleasant experience.
