In Ontario, for example, there are Early Years Centres, which offer parents and caregivers free drop-in programs for children up to the age of 6. Although these centres don’t focus mainly on new residents of Canada, families from any background may participate. Many centres are located in schools so parents and caregivers can become familiar with neighbouring schools and meet parents of students who may one day share a classroom with their children.

Early Years Centres focus on 4 specific areas:

1. Preparing to be a parent if a child is on the way.
2. Helping your child to talk, read and play.
3. Learning new parenting skills.
4. Meeting the needs of your family by obtaining information about other community programs.
